South West Coastal Treats
The English Riviera is the name given to the Torbay region in the South West of England. The number of tourists visiting the Riviera has been growing, since the days of Queen Victoria, and today the area is one of the top vacation spots in the county of Devon.
It’s not just the mild climate that attracts so many people every year, there are many tourist attractions and holiday activities that make the South Devon Coast the perfect escape for families, couples and single travellers looking for adventure. Anyone with a love of nature will find something enjoyable to do in this part of the world, whether they’re camping, staying in luxury lodges, or relaxing in a cosy log cabin.
Nature plays a key role in South West holidays. Visitors and locals can enjoy a stroll through parks and garden along the seafront, and there are plenty of nature trails and footpaths to explore. Across the region, there are more than 2000 acres of public gardens to enjoy, as well as eleven Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), which have been noted for their contribution to biodiversity. The region also is recognised as a Geopark, since the local landscape has a 400 million year history!
One of the most popular pastimes on the Riviera is spending the day on one of the ten Blue Flag beaches lining the twenty-two miles of coastline. There are sand, shingle, and pebble beaches, offering something to suit every beachcomber or sun worshipper.
If you’re interested in learning about the bays cultural roots, spend the day at Kent’s Cavern, or look around Torbay Museum, then visit the Agatha Christie gallery – a display of photographs and memorabilia dedicated to Devon’s most famous daughter. The English Riviera has dozens of attractions aimed at all ages, such as Paignton Zoo, which is home to thousands of animals, and has lots of interesting things to learn and do. It’s sister venue, Living Coasts, is a conservation project dedicated to marine life around the globe, and gives children the chance to meet some aquatic animals, whilst being educated about wildlife conservation.
