Best Of Britain
The British Isles are a fabulous place to holiday and, as the sweep in cheap foreign travel is beginning to subside, those in the know have already begun their holidaying experiences in Britain. If you haven’t done it before, this year is a great one to choose, with the Olympic games and Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee , it is set to be a summer of fun and frivolity for the UK! Here are a few places we think you should visit to get the best out of the British Isles…
The Gower Peninsula Wales
The Gower Peninsula in south Wales was one of the first places to be given Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty status in 1949. And it is no surprise; stretching along 16 miles of coastline the Gower is one great place to see in the British Isles. There you can climb, surf, ride horses, walk and hike to your hearts content. There are great historical sites to visit such as Oystermouth Castle. Or visit Three Cliffs bay for truly stunning views and a wonderful location to pass a day, on the open sands surrounded by cliffs and gorse covered hills.
The Lake District
The Lake District is England’s largest national park and includes its largest mountain – Scafell Pike, which stands at an impressive 3209 ft, as well as England’s deepest lake – Wastwater, which in parts is 258 ft deep. The Lake District is a great place for adventure lovers (and those who prefer to holiday in a little more comfort as well!)
There is wonderful walking to be had, including the famous Wainright Way. There is no better way to spend a sunny afternoon than on the shores of Lake Coniston and there is much history and heritage to soak up too. Visit John Ruskin’s house and go and see the home of Beatrix Potter, where she created her famous children’s tales.
Cornwall
If you are in the South of England, it is so worth going all the way and getting down to lovely Cornwall. The beaches in Cornwall are the best in the country and there are plenty of other activities to soak up to. We think the Lost Gardens of Heligan are not to be missed, as is the Seal Sanctuary in Gweek, where you can meet rescued and rehabilitated seals and the fabulous Minack Theatre, which is built into the cliffs at Porthcurno.
Cotswolds
The Cotswolds are a fantastic location for a holiday, renowned for their rolling hills and gentle countryside. Walking is big here and there are still quite a few great pubs to visit too. During summer months, the Cotswolds has a number of traditional events, such as the Cheese Rolling competition in Brockworth in Gloucestershire, where competitors race down a very steep hill to catch a cheese, with the winner taking the cheese home. And there’s the Woolsack Races in Tetbury, where competitors carry huge sacks of wool on their shoulders and race up and down a stretch of hill between two public houses. There is always a pub involved!
