As a city located on the coast, Portsmouth in the south of England is a hugely popular tourist destination. It is a great place to take the kids – not least because of Portsmouth’s impressive military history – it’s a wonderful place to teach them more about the past, as well as having plenty more attractions to offer, too.
Ghost Walks
For example, if you are going to Portsmouth as a family, you could go on a Local Haunts tour. There are quite a few different walking tours, as well as bus trips and talks on different aspects of Portsmouth that are suitable for the whole family. There are even ghost bus tours that you can go if you want to give the kids a scare! The tours are a great way to learn a bit more about history; just remember to ring ahead if you are thinking of going on one.
Southsea
Southsea, which is very near to Portsmouth, is another really good place to take the kids. For example, you could pay a visit to Southsea Castle, which is free to enter and was built in 1544 so there’s plenty of history to learn about. There is also a Splash Pool in Southsea, which is ideal if you have got young kids who love the water. As well as paddling pools, this attraction also offers play areas and more to keep the kids occupied. It’s only open during the warmer summer months, but if you’re there when it’s open it’s definitely worth a visit.
Wildlife Spotting
If your family loves the outdoors then somewhere else you might like to visit is Farlington Marshes Wildlife Reserve. Again, this is a free attraction and has 308 acres to explore. If you go in summer, you’ll be able to see lots of birds, butterflies and flowers, making for a great outdoor experience for all the family. The Great Salterns in Portsmouth is another good outdoor attraction, with a lake and grassland to explore.
Tower Trips
If you want to take in a bit more of Portsmouth’s history, you could also head to the Round Tower, which was built in 1418. This is also near to some other good historical places to visit, such as the Square Tower. It’s also near the Royal Garrison Church, which was built way back in 1212. The kids are also sure to love the Spinnaker Tower at Gunwharf Quays, which you are able to go up and get a great view over the city before heading down to the entertainment and retail area that makes Gunwharf Quays such a popular area of the city.
