Wherever you are staying around the UK, you are never too far away from a site of historical interest. The castle is undoubtedly one of the iconic symbols associated with Britain, and fortunately there are numerous ones to visit across the country. The Tower of London is a hugely successful tourist attraction, its opulence and grizzly history attracting thousands of visitors a year – yet there are many lesser-known castles which are equally fascinating.
In the Midlands, one of the most impressive castles to visit is undoubtedly Warwick Castle. As well as being aesthetically stunning, there is a great amount to do during your visit which makes it an excellent day out for all of the family.
Throughout the busy peaks in the year, visitors can enjoy live jousting events, falconry displays, and even witness the world’s biggest trebuchet firing a missile over 150 metres. The interior of the castle is beautifully decorated and filled with waxwork figures to recreate how it would have looked hundreds of years ago. Visitors who are brave enough can also experience the Castle Dungeon – where live actors and terrifying special events bring to life the gory history of the castle’s tortured prisoners. Other castles around the Midlands area include Kenilworth and Dudley.
Portchester castle in Portsmouth is a surprising gem if you are holidaying in the area. It has a rich history which spans back for 2000 years. In 1415, Henry V used the castle as his departure point for the infamous Battle of Agincourt in France, whilst in 1601Portchester had an extremely famous guest in Queen Elizabeth I. Those interested in the darker side of history will also be fascinated to learn that during the 18th and 19th centuries, prisoners of war were housed within the castle’s walls. It is one of the few remaining Roman forts in England and so a must-see for anyone with historical interests – perhaps book a hotel near Portsmouth especially to visit this monument!
North of the border, Edinburgh Castle is a striking castle rich in Scottish history. Situated on an extinct volcano, there are historical references to the site being used as a fortress from as early as 600AD. Visitors can take one of the free guided tours on offer, or explore the castle walls and opulent interiors in their own time. The crown jewels of Scotland, the ‘Honours of the Kingdom’ are on display in the castle, along with a number of other fascinating exhibitions.
As said, regardless of your location in England, Ireland, Scotland or Wales, there will certainly be a nearby castle waiting to take your breath away. Opportunities to experience these beautiful monuments of old Britain should not be missed!
