A Great Start To The Day
New York is a food lover’s paradise. And with breakfast being the most important meal of the day, New York is a City that knows how to do it in style. Here’s a list of five of the best restaurants to get you out of bed in the Big Apple.
St Ambroeus, West Village, Upper East Side and Southampton
This Italian Pasticceria first opened in Milan in 1936. It soon made its way to New York where it serves authentic Milanese fare in an elegant and relaxed setting. Start your day with home-made pastries such as delectable butter cookies, sweet brioche or melt in the mouth panettone. Or go for the New York-inspired yoghurt and granola, fruit pancakes or eggs benedict. Whatever you choose you can guarantee to wash it down with one of the best cappuccinos in the City.
Alice’s Tea Cup, Upper West Side and Upper East Side
This kitsch little tea shop serves up delicious breakfasts with a twist in three locations across the City. Choose from the scrumptious full breakfasts or home-baked waffles and bagels but look out for the surprises. Crepes come with a choice of fillings that range from chocolate and nut, to marshmallow fluff or lavender earl grey honey. And the poached eggs and smoked salmon are brilliantly accompanied by rosemary hollandaise and a side portion of roasted asparagus and pears.
Brasserie, Midtown
At home in the iconic Seagram Building, this uber-sleek, slightly futuristic restaurant provides high-style French food. The menu is wide and has everything you would expect from a classy American breakfast j0int – eggs, granola, pancakes, bagels. But it is the execution that turns the ordinary into the extraordinary. Try the truffle scrambled eggs or the steak and eggs that offers up a petit filet mignon. And the in-house breads and pastries are a delightful way to kick-start your day.
The Spotted Pig, West Village
If you’re feeling home-sick for a spot of British breakkie, then this Michelin star gastro pub is as good as your own local if not better. It describes its food as seasonal British and Italian – demonstrated in the lashings of sausages and bacon, alongside servings of ricotta on the weekend brunch menu. But the American influence is strong and can be found in the gingerbread pancakes with vanilla cream and candied almonds, or the French toast with bananas and bourbon syrup. Yum!
Fred’s at Barneys, Madison Avenue
This department store eatery is the place to go if you want to bring together two great American pastimes – eating and people-watching. And after you’ve downed your napkin and binoculars you can move on to a third American favourite – shopping ! But with Fred’s smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel coming in at $22 – you might find yourself ordering a glass of water before sneaking off for a second breakfast elsewhere.
If you’re looking for great food at affordable prices, head to the area around Columbia University (above 110th Street). Here you’ll find a brilliant selection of student eateries that offer a bright, cheery and cheap start to the day!
