Big Screen – Humberstone Gate 
Leicester has a Big Screen, and coming up on Saturday 7th April – 10am to 4pm – “The Masters” will be screened live – showing live coverage of the August National Golf Championships. And to encourage anyone who is thinking of trying out the game, The Leicestershire and Rutland County Golf Partnership will have a team available, with games, competition and ideas on how to get you started and how to improve your game. On Thursday 17th May you can enjoy a Royal Opera House Live Relay of the Opera La Bohem, with the performance starting at 7.30pm. Bring a picnic and chairs and revel in the classic production which brings to life Paris of the 1830s, For something more modern, how about supporting the The Big Dance World Record Attempt? On Friday 18th May, from 1.00pm you can support The Big Dance School Pledge – a mass participation dance event for schools across the UK and around the world! This year will be a world record attempt with the Screen in Leicester showing various groups – and a Dance event in the square so you can join in!
Music
Leicester has a great reputation for music, and De Montfort Hall on Granville Road LE1 7RU, is the home of Leicester Philharmonia Orchestra. For 2012, Orchestra Unwrapped is their major new education project in Leicester which offers thousands of young people the opportunity to experience live music in the most engaging and exciting way. If you have children who haven’t yet had opportunity to try out a musical instrument – there will be lots of opportunities for everyone to have a try, learn a new skill and develop a love of music!
The Philharmonia Orchestra has been resident at Leicester’s De Montfort Hall since 1997, and it performs approximately nine concerts each year, featuring the repertoire and soloists of its London programme. This year, artists include Sir John Tomlinson, Christoph von Dohnanyi, the Leicester Philharmonic Choir, Craig Ogden, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Sergey Khachatryan, and Edward Gardner.
Leicester Caribbean Carnival
Leicester Caribbean Carnival is a celebration of all things Caribbean and provides a platform for Caribbean people to display the best of costume, food, music and dance. Unlike the Notting Hill Carnival in London, Leicesters Carnival has breathing space with room to get into the music and dance! It’s held in early August. In the unlikely event it gets a bit boisterous and you’re injured, you can always find one of the law firms in Leicester or speak to someone who can help.
Diwali In Leicester
Later on in the year you can enjoy the sounds, sights and scents of Diwali. Celebrations in Leicester are one of the biggest outside of India! Around 35,000 people attend the event, to watch the switch on of the lights on Belgrave Road. This years event promises to be the biggest ever – and Diwali has a similar significance within the Asian calendar as Cristmas and Eid. Traditionally, the purpose of Diwali to celebrate light – to banish evil and recognise self enlightenment. This festival is a major one in the Asian Calendar – and Hindus, Seikhs and Jains come together to celebrate light and life. Enjoy the superb fireworks display and live cultural entertainment on stage as the festival of light marks the start of the Hindu New Year.
