Olympia
See for yourself the birthplace of the Olympic Games at Olympia in Greece, where the games have been taking place since 776 BC. The village of Olympia now caters for the large number of visitors the site attracts each year, and a museum there charts the history of the Olympic Games. A tourist office in the town is also a useful stop off before heading to the original Olympic site. Although much of the original buildings were destroyed, foundations, columns and archways still remain, giving a fascinating glimpse into the lives of sportsmen more than 2,700 years ago!
Ephesus
Another historical port of call on many cruise holidays around the eastern Mediterranean is the ancient city of Ephesus in Turkey. During the Roman period, Ephesus was one of the largest cities in the Mediterranean region, and was famed for the Temple of Artemis, built around 550 BC and one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Although the temple was destroyed in the 4th century, the ruins of the city are still in remarkably good condition, and are a must-see for visitors to the area. Highlights such as the Roman Library of Celsus and the Gate of Augustus give an incredible insight into what these ancient cities would have looked like.
Dubrovnik
As well as ancient historical ports of call, eastern Mediterranean cruises often stop at Dubrovnik on the Croatian coast. The Old City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its Old Harbour also provides a picturesque setting for lunch and photos! Architecture is the main attraction in the city, including the 16th century Sponza Palace, also home to National Archives. The Rectors Palace is another highlight, and the St Saviour Church is another Renaissance jewel. Next to the church, the Franciscan Monastery houses a huge collection of valuable documents and scrolls, as well as religious artefacts from the past 500 years.
