The World of New York Museums
The Guggenheim Museum building is in itself an architectural marvel, built by the architect Frank Lloyd Wright, it is well known for its white spiral structure. This is a world renowned museum that exhibits modern art, film and performances. It is also possible to attend lectures here that are given by the artists, as well as attend classes and workshops aimed at children, teenagers and adults. This is something that the whole family can enjoy! It is bursting with culture and is one of the most influential art centers of the 20th century.
The Museum of Modern Art, or MoMA as it is known in New York, was opened by founding director Alfred H. Barr, Jr in 1929. This was an innovative idea, designed to create a museum dedicated just to modern art for the people. Exhibiting films, sculptures, paintings, photography and much much more, its collections are numerous and varied, giving spectators a rich insight into modern art.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art was an idea born in Paris by a group of Americans who decided to try to bring art education to Americans. It was first opened on Fifth Avenue in 1880. With collections such as the Cesnola Collection it quickly became a competitor in the race for cultural dominance. The museum now boasts numerous galleries and collections and is well worth a visit! The Cloisters and Museum gardens are part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Opened for the public in 1938, they are to be found at Fort Tyron Park in northern Manhattan. The pieces here range from the 9th to the 16th Century with over 3000 works of art coming from medieval europe.
