Lisdoonvarna In Ireland

A Dance Party In County Clare

The Town of Lisdoonvarna in County Clare, Ireland has an usual reputation for being the key matching matchmaking centre of Europe! It’s an old tradition – and for a few weeks in September, Irish people from every continent, return to this little place in search of that perfect someone or more often, the perfect party. So if you think that a little too much time has passed, and you want to find yourself a life partner – book a flight to Ireland, for the biggest dance event of the summer.

History

It all began in the 18th century when the town developed as a result of it’s natural resource – mineral waters. The small town was bursting at the seams with people taking the waters – and out of this, matchmaking parties and gatherings began to take place. The local bachelor boys and sedate farmers who were too busy during spring and summer to meet and socialise were able to take advantage of the holiday season. With the harvest gathered in, the rural community had the ideal opportunity to meet a potential spouse.

Matchmaker Matchmaker…..

Mr. Willie Daly is the last of the officially recognised matchmakers. Willie has been plying his matchmaking skills for about 40 years. Every night of the matchmaking season, Willy will sit in the front room of The Matchmaker Bar, with his ancient ledger, a memorial to the family craft. Through this he can trace all the matches made, weddings, pairings, and it’s stuffed with photographs and applications from those seeking a mate with the help of Mr Daly.  Women can sign up for free; men pay around 20 euro’s and that’s because there’s more men than women! It’s something that the older generation feel more comfortable with – and that’s reflecting in the dance styles. Old time during the day, and the more modern footwork happens at night. The majority of  ”matches” are made after the event, although he might encourage a potential couple to have a little dance, on the same evening they sign up. Two of his children, Marie and Grainne are already following the family tradition – with the advantages of the internet to back this next phase of matchmaking.

The world has changed, and these days, people have lots of methods to meet and communicate.  When the matchmaking events were first held, men and women were usually only able to socialise in the heightened atmosphere of Victorian values. Now, Lisdoonvarna’s annual festival has evolved into a large single’s event. The village has one key street, and it’s around this area that the evenings liven up. People may no longer need to come looking for a husband or wife, but they still want a good time, and they come by the thousand! Dances run from 12.00 noon each day and carry on into the small hours of the next morning. Set dancing exhibitions are also a feature of the event and there’s live Irish music in most pubs, although getting to the bar can be something of a challenge. It’s fairly basic stuff – hand drawn posters, and small bands thumping out the music, but it feels genuine and there are lots of laughs to be had.

How To Get There

Head for Lisdoonvarna this September and early October. On the whol it’s very good natured and you’ll need your dancing shoes and lots of energy. Men are not backward in coming forward and are always happy to ask a girl to dance. There are a few local hotels such as the old Hydro Hotel, or try the Guest Houses along the coastal paths, with views of the  Cliffs of Moher and the Aran Islands.

Lisdoonvarna is located in Co. Clare on Ireland’s West Coast and 45 minutes from Shannon Airport. Or you could fly to Dublin via easyjet and drive which will take about 3 hours. Ennis and Galway are served by rail. For more information, contact the Tourist Board of Ireland.

Luxury Spas In The Winter Sun

Villa Marjina

Sunshine And Blue Skies To Lift The Spirits

While we all know the dangers of overexposure to UV rays, during the winter our bodies can crave the sun.   Sunlight levels increase Serotonin which makes you happier, while vitamin D prevent or improve conditions such as bone disease, muscle pain and high blood pressure.  If you are looking for relaxing winter sun, and don’t want to stay in the confines of a hotel, why not consider a luxury villa within a hotel resort? You will have space to relax and the hotel could include spa facilities, where you can be sunned, pampered and treated.

Private Island Paradise

Nothing is more relaxing than “getting away from it all” and what better way than holidaying on a private island? While major Caribbean islands attract the most tourists, the area includes many smaller islands, plenty of which are uninhabited – the Bahamas alone contains over 700 islands!

Where to stay: Look for resorts where you can enjoy privacy, without feeling secluded. Peter Island’s Spa on The BVI is one of the finest in the Caribbean.  The 1,800 acre private island combines stunning scenery of green hillsides which lead down to beautiful beaches and sparkling bays, with excellent sporting facilities, all set in a private environment. The spa hosts 12 treatment rooms, its own pool, steam rooms and private Jacuzzi right on the beach. Enjoy the best of both worlds, privacy and space in your own villa and pool, yet save the hassle of cooking with all meals included from the resort.  If you want to get out and explore further, choose the Crow’s Nest and Falcon’s Nest, which come with their own vehicle for exploring the island but also private staff including a chef.

For Some Sun Closer to Home

Egypt can offer spiritual getaways to help you relax and unwind. Throughout Egypt, yoga holidays are becoming increasingly popular. They give you concentrated time to focus on your practice and will help you rebalance your three cores and leave you feeling completely re-energised. Santa Fe Christmas

santa fe

Combining Christmas Cultures in Santa Fe

If you are looking to experience a really different sort of Christmas, consider a trip to Santa Fe in America. Founded in 1607 by westerners – its real history begins with the Indians and there are still villages or pueblos surrounding Santa Fe, each with their own winter traditions. Festivals here are a blend of cultures – there’s traditional dancing and chanting, but there is a nod to European celebrations too so you’ll still have elements of a traditional Christmas if you want. Flights can be got for great prices right now, and a new Christmas experience might be just the thing to break away from those Christmas routines!

santa-fe-at-night-with-lights

Farolito Lights

Christmas in Sante Fe is uniquely colourful, combining hundreds of years worth of traditions from Native American, Spanish and Anglo cultures. It’s sunny in the day, although cold, and can go down to about minus 7 degrees at night! Lights are everywhere – candles are placed in little bags of sand – and these decorate every ledge, staircase, square, fountain edge. The effect is stunning. There are big bonfires, and singers roam the streets. There are train rides through the snowy countryside and ski-runs for those needing a piece of the action.

The celebrations are at their height from 23rd to 26th December and there is lots to experience in those few days. Some of the most interesting and innovative art in America can be found on Canyon Road or around the central Plaze Square. Gallery owners open their doors and encourage viewers in with a glass of cider, which has been heated and spiced up. Great for thawing out to – while you wander round and look at the fabulous creations of steer heads skulls, rugs, and tapestry works.

What There Is To Do

You take out a ski-ing pass for a day, or get your walking legs for a hike to the Dale Ball Trails. Children will love the Christmas themed train rides, complete with cookies and hot chocolate and Christmas stories! There is a wonderful Christmas Performance held at the Loretto Chapel, before you talk the Walk of Lights. Street lights are dimmed or turned off, so the effect of the lights is really magical. You can attend a real Christmas Midnight Mass at St Francis Cathedral – a big event for locals.

There are some excellent museums, such as the Georgia O’Keefe Museum or the Palace of the Governors, built in 17th Century. Sante Fe is the oldest US capital city, and has the oldest road – called the El Camino Real – running all the way to Mexico. Christmas is a busy time of year, so make sure you have somewhere to stay before you set off, and if you can, find a room with a kiva fireplace – perfect for curling up in front on a cold and starry night.

It’s a straight forward route to get to Albuquerque, the nearest airport and there are lots of international flights out there, so take a break from the routine – and head down Mexico way, for a fiesta filled Christmas!
