Holidays Are In Sight
February in the UK can be a miserable time. The weather is cold, but not in the pretty, snowy way we see in December and January, and it seems like forever until the summer. It’s the ideal time to jet off with the family at half term for a bit of winter sun. But half term can be a tricky time to take the family away. There are so many factors to consider. Where will the best weather be? Which countries have the shortest flight time? Where can you take the whole family if you’re on a budget? A week seems like a short time to fit in a holiday abroad, and with many people having the same idea, how do you know which deal to book? Here are some great half term holiday ideas to get you started in time for February.
Canary Islands And Egypt
February is probably the best time to head to the Alps for a skiing holiday, but if you’re on a budget the chances of finding a cheap deal are slim to say the least. A great alternative is to head to the Canary Islands , or Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt and catch some winter sun. Both have fairly short flight times and Egypt in particular is blessed with great weather at this time of year. In the Canaries, Gran Canaria is great for walking and activity holidays, particularly in February when it’s cooler and easier to move around!
Morocco
Morroco is a great place to take the family in February, with temperatures being far kinder to children than they are in the height of summer. The great thing about Morocco is that it is likely to take younger travellers (and their parents) out of their comfort zone, colourful souks and crowded bazaars bursting with unfamiliar yet enchanting smells, sounds and sights. The children will be raving about snake charmers and belly dancers back at school for weeks!
Malta
Malta is another option, or for something a little different, the Gambia offers absolutely fantastic beach holidays at very low prices. If your budget can stretch a little further afield, the Bahamas are stunning in February, although the longer flight time is worth taking into consideration.
May Half Term Holiday Ideas
May is arguably the best time for a family holiday in the Mediterranean, with temperatures not as stifling as they become in the height of summer. For unspoilt beaches and natural beauty, try Costa de la Luz or Catalonia’s rugged coastline. Ibiza is more family friendly in May, or for something a bit more upmarket, a family holiday villa in Majorca makes for an extra special treat.
Greek Islands
Children will love the Greek Islands in May. Crete and Kos are wonderful places to explore for both parents and children, and on mainland Greece, the Sani Resort is perfect for families.
Turkey and Portugal
The Algarve is a firm family favourite, offering safe, white beaches and lots of family friendly resorts, while Turkey is just four hours away and its Mediterranean coast offers particularly good weather in May, even though prices are significantly lower than they are in the summer. In fact, the same can be said for most places. Tenerife and Lanzarote have absolutely fascinating scenery as well as great beaches, and children will love the cable car ride up to Tenerife’s stunning Mount Teide, not to mention the great family attractions, including Loro Parque Zoo and Siam Water Park.
