The Sunshine Island of the Mediterranean

Looking for a long hot summer with a classical twist? If you’re dreaming of turquoise seas, picturesque harbours and stunning countryside, then it’s time to visit the island of Crete.

Crete is about 45 km (280 miles) south of Athens. Crete has two international airports, so getting a direct flight is easy. You can hire a car from the airport and buses and cabs are affordable and reliable. Overnight ferry services run from the mainland too.  Crete offers a wide range of resorts to suit all visitors.

Summer begins in May and runs to October, the most popular resorts are Malia and Hersonissos. Holidays to Malia and Hersonissos both offer beautiful beaches to lie on, great nightlife and plenty of water sports to try out to keep you busy. Food in Crete offers something for everyone’s tastes from rich casseroles of beef or rabbit to fresh grilled fish. Cretans make wonderful chips and doughnuts too!

Crete has a colourful cultural past, evident in its architecture.  The capital of the island is Heraklion or also known as Irakleio, which has a busy waterfront, and is home to the Archaeological Museum housing one of the finest European collections of treasures from Minoan times. The ruins of Knossos, a Minoan Palace, displays vivid frescos, bringing old myths and legends to life. Heraklion holidays are perfect for those looking to combine some sun, sea and sand with Greek culture and history.

Things to look out for:

  • Paleochora resort on the south coast has excellent beaches for those who love to sunbathe and swim.
  • There are lots of varied hiking trails in Crete. Test your walking legs, with a hike to Samaria Gorge, a 16 km walk (10 miles) to the south coast. The walk takes you through the spectacular Iron Gates to a deep rock chasm.
  • Visit Chania in the western part of the Island. It has a Naval Museum and waterside fortress. Chania is known for its tall, delicate Italian buildings. The bustling harbour has bars and restaurants’ by the waterfront and the town has a backdrop of snow capped mountains. Have a meal by moonlight on the quayside for a relaxing end to your day.
  • Dress with moderation when visiting churches and other religious sites and remember that local people are Cretan (not Greek) but when you ask for a coffee…..ask for a Greek Coffee!
