Bizarre Prague
Prague is famous for its rich history, abundance of galleries and stunning city landscapes. But hiding behind that fairy-tale description, Prague has plenty of bizarre quirks to entertain and amuse you. Here are just five of the weird and wonderful things you can do on breaks to Prague.
The Black Light Theatre
All of the performances here are staged under a black light to create head-spinning neon shows. Imagine a psychedelic Alice in Wonderland…but weirder!
The website welcomes you to its ‘wonderful world of WOW’, and whether you love or hate the fluorescent scenes, wacky audience interaction and fantastical journey away from reality, you can’t deny the Black Light Theatre is definitely one of the things to do in Prague that has a certain wow-factor!
Sculpture
David Cerny is one of the most controversial and famous artists from the Czech Republic. He has many bizarre installations in Prague, but one of the most curious are the animatronic water statues that write out quotes from Prague literature with water coming from their, well, the clue’s in the name. For an extra bout of wackiness, you can send a SMS to them and they’ll stop mid-flow to write out your message! Writing away in a puddle shaped like the Czech Republic, this bizarre sculpture can be found in the Mala Strana district on the west side of the river.
Giant Babies
Another creation by David Cerny, you will find giant babies crawling up the Zizkov Television Tower. Each sculpture weighs about 800kg and they were so popular with Prague residents that David Cerny had to make them a permanent installation. Due to their popularity, three more giant infants were installed at ground level in Kampa Park. The sculptures are the size of cars and have air-vents for faces, more creepy than cute.
Sperm Tea Spoons
Amongst other things, the Modernista shop in Prague’s Old Town sells tea spoons in the shape of sperm. The perfect place to pick up a bizarre Prague souvenir, Modernista also sells expressionist ash trays, Skoda toy cars and porcelain equivalents of disposable plastic cups. Prague’s also famous for its puppets and you’ll find plenty of marionettes on show. From kooky art gifts to a wooden puppet, it’s impossible to leave Prague without a fun souvenir!
Barbie World
Did you know Barbie’s complete name is Barbie Milicent Roberts? The second floor of the toy museum in Prague castle is dedicated to Barbie and her friends and is an incredible display of Barbie through the ages. If dolls unsettle you, then avoid it at all costs, since this exhibition is the second largest Barbie display in the world and has hundreds of dolls, from four 1959 first edition Barbies to the Spice Girls. Ken dolls are there in full force too, and there’s even a Donald Trump doll!
After a day of looking at urinating statues, enormous babies and watching people prance around under a black light, you’ll be after some refreshment. The U Medvidku pub in Old Town serves X-Beer, a malty brew with a whopping alcohol percentage of 11.8%.
Prague is an incredible place for a short holiday. Whether you want traditional sights or something a bit different, staying in a Prague apartment or hotel is the perfect way to get the most out of this fascinating city.
