Of all the worlds’ continents, Europe is perhaps its most diverse. Deep historic significance, glorious and glistening sandy beaches and some of the world’s finest attractions can all be found within its borders but by far the most exciting places to visit in Europe are its cities. Almost every European city has a certain, almost indefinable ‘something’ about it that sets it apart and here we’ll be examining some of the continent’s most intriguing cities, some of which you will have heard of, others you might not have. However you can be guaranteed that all would make an ideal weekend getaway destination for a couple, family or group of friends.
Paris, France
There is very little that hasn’t been said about Paris. The ‘city of love’ is one of the most desirable vacation destinations in the world for a variety of reasons, chief amongst which is the sheer wealth of things to do, see and experience. The Louvre is one of the world’s largest and most revered museums and is most famously renowned as the current home of the most famous painting in history; the Mona Lisa. The Eiffel Tower meanwhile is a monument that sits high on many people’s ‘bucket lists’ and is as striking in person as it is on screen. Away from the more obvious ‘tourist’ spots though (The Notre Dame Cathedral and the Champs-Elysees included) there is so much more to Paris than historical landmarks and fine dining. The nightlife is exceptional and for fashion hounds, just about every major fashion house in the world will have a representative store so shopping becomes more of an ‘experience’ than a chore. For couples it is possibly the most perfect weekend getaway location in the world but the truth is that anyone could lose themselves in Paris. What’s more, for families, Disneyland is less than an hour away!
Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Amsterdam is a beautiful city of interlocking canals, gorgeous architecture, riveting history and some of the worlds very best fine dining, Amsterdam is also the cultural and commercial capital of the Netherlands with some of the world’s best museums centred on the cities museum square. These include the enormous ‘Rijksmuseum’ of Dutch art, Anne Frank’s house, the Van Gogh museum and the Stedelijk museum of modern art. Entertainment wise, the city comes alive at night with the red light district offering a wealth of cheeky delights. The city is also home to some of the world’s most celebrated music venues (specifically the ‘Heineken Music Hall’ and ‘Paradiso’) and nightclubs. Staying in Amsterdam can be remarkably cost effective and it’s truly the city that offers something for everyone.
Faro, Portugal
Situated just south of Vilamoura (the continent’s largest tourist resort with bespoke complexes such as the ‘Four Seasons’ amongst some of the best in their class), Faro is a capital city of the Algarve region of Portugal and is often referred to as the capital city that people ‘forget’ to visit. This is a minor tragedy, as Faro is a fascinating city full of character and charm. The oldest part of the city rests within its ancient walls, which contain tourist hot-spots such as the Cathedral and the Bishop’s Palace. Its cobbled streets all lead to the vast and culturally diverse central square of Largo de Se, itself a sight that cannot be missed. There is also a gorgeous, subtle marina offering a restrained but classy nightlife and Faro is the perfect city for those older travellers looking for something a little different that won’t break the bank.
Florence, Italy
A recent online poll chose Florence as the best European city to visit for a weekend break and who am I to argue? World famous restaurants, a peerless cultural heritage and a historical legacy that is backed up by perfectly reserved fortresses, chapels, halls and gardens make Florence one of the most gorgeous cities on Earth. Whilst Venice and Rome might enjoy a higher percentage of the countries tourist trade, Florence remains unspoilt by both the ravages of time and over familiarity and therefore represents the perfect blend of class, education and fun. It’s not a cheap place to visit but then we all deserve something a little special every now and then don’t we?
