Five ideas for short breaks in England

Everyone needs a break from routine every now and again. If you’re after an exciting city break or relaxing weekend break then VisitEngland is here to help. From world famous destinations to hidden gems and a few in between, the options are limitless for a well deserved break.

1. Bath City Break

Bath is one of the most historic and picturesque cities in England. Blessed with a wealth of historic architecture the surrounding countryside doesn’t fail to impress either. The entire city is in fact a designated World Heritage Site, with historic highlights including the ancient Roman Baths that date from the fourth century. Relax and enjoy the city by boat or pamper yourself in the Thermae Bath Spa, where you can bathe in the warm, natural mineral-rich waters and enjoy an amazing view over the city from an open-air rooftop pool.

Hot tip: Treat yourself to a famous Sally Lunn bun that still uses the same secret recipe from when she first arrived in England 300 years ago!

2. Weekend break at the beach

England’s summer months are accompanied by warm weather and awash with activity. No area of England feels this more than the many seaside resorts along England’s shores. Weekend breaks by the beach are perfect for all the family and even the dog. Spend the weekend exploring rock pools, discovering coastlines, experiencing new water sports or simply relaxing by the sea! With loads of great beach locations throughout England you won’t have to go far to find one near you.

Hot tip: Braunton Burrows in Devon is one of the most beautiful sandy beaches in England. England’s largest sand dune system is a UNESCO biosphere reserve and a spectacular natural site you shouldn’t miss out.

3. Try something different

If you spend your days stuck in a routine and are desperate for something to break the cycle, try something different with a hot air balloon trip. One of the oldest and most romantic forms of aviation, hot air ballooning is a totally unique experience that will take you far away from the chaos of city life. The peace and serenity you will experience whilst up in the sky will be something you won’t forget in a hurry.

Hot tip: Hot air ballooning is completely dependent on wind conditions so summer months are generally best. It’s also very hands-on so don’t be afraid to muck-in.

4. Northern City Breaks

City break locations are particularly abundant in the north of England; so much so we couldn’t just recommend one! Manchester, Liverpool, Blackpool, all in England’s northwest offer up endless possibilities for a fun filled weekend city break. Further north, Newcastle and York provide further and varied opportunities to explore and indulge your favourite activities. The abundance of activities makes these fun-loving northern cities perfect for family breaks.

Hot tip: York has 365 pubs with almost as many real and traditional ales so you’ll never be without a warm place to have a well deserved beverage.

5. Spa weekend breaks

Everyone deserves a little pampering every now and then and spending a weekend without the worries of work life is the perfect way to recharge your batteries. There are many world class spas in England but they don’t come bigger than Nirvana Spa in Berkshire. The UK’s largest spa has the widest range of facilities to help you have the ultimate relaxing experience.

Hot tip: Nirvana Spa has 6 pure, natural spring-fed pools allowing you to relax in the most tranquil and natural settings.
