Top Mumbai Festivals

Here are a selection of top events and major festivals in Mumbai throught the year.

There are major events throughout the year in Mumbai, starting in mid-January with the Mumbai Festival showcasing the city’s food and culture for two weeks at venues around the city.

In late January / early February the nine-day Kala Ghoda Festival showcases the arts including music, dance, theatre, and cinema.

Elephanta Festival

Around February, the Elephanta Festival of music and dance takes place on Mumbai’s Elephanta Island, with the famous Elephant Caves and rock sculptures as the backdrop. Take a ferry from the Gateway of India (about 45 minutes one way).

Holi

In late February/early March the colourful Holi festival of harvest and fertility sees people throwing brightly-coloured powder and water at one another.

Ganesh

In August/September, Ganesh, the city’s biggest festival, celebrates the elephant-headed deity of the same name, with Ganesh statues dunked in the sea at Chowpatty Beach.

Later in the year, in October/November, the whole city celebrates Diwali (Hindu Festival of Light) for five days.

Mumbai Airport

India’s key international gateway is Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (Mumbai Airport) is. The cheapest fares tend to be on flights from London Heathrow, but there are also good fares from other international airports in the UK.

Journey times take less than 10 hours on Etihad’s direct flights to Mumbai, and the airport is located about twenty miles north of the centre of Mumbai.
