An unexpected side effect of the economic down turn this year has resulted in reports of a car hire shortage throughout Europe. Places most likely to suffer most from the shortage of hire cars will be the popular holiday destinations in the UK, France, Spain and especially italy where car hire companies have decided to ignore the forecasts of a bumper tourist season and high demand for car rental.
Car hire in Italy is usually affordable and simple to arrange – with hire comapnies at airports, main towns and resorts all competing for business. This year however those hoping to find cheap car hire in Italy may be in for a surprise when they arrive to find that there are less cars available for hire in Italy this summer.
Alternatives will be to rely on public transport – a daunting prospect when you consider the overwhelming heat during July and August – mixed with the tendancy for inland towns and cities to simply close down leaving a lack of public transport.
We recommend booking your hire car early to avoid disappointment – as we have described previously on this site Italy has some wonderful driving trips
