Feathered Friends
The Gower peninsula is the perfect place for bird watchers. The north coast of the area is a salt marsh and so its exceptionally bird friendly, offering superb bird watching along the Burry Inlet. The area also offers some of the best coastal hill walking conditions in the UK. The bays of Langland, Caswell and Pwlldu are exceptionally beautiful and are situated just south of Mumbles.
The area also has a number of beautiful buildings, historical sites and also wonderful activities for those visiting the Gower peninsula. Oystermouth Castle, which reopened during the summer of 2011 after renovations, is a very impressive castle beside Mumbles. The castle originated in the 12th century and has a wide ranging history being central to Welsh history on many occasions.
Valley Houses
Gower is also a great place for surfing and is one of the UKs best places for the sport. Being a peninsula, Gower enjoys some terrific swells, and wind conditions ensures it gets some great waves. Its a real hotspot for surfers on the Welsh Coast.
Gower’s Aberglasney House is also a wonderful site. Set in the Tywi valley it is one of the finest gardens in Wales and is great if you want something a little manicured in contrast to the rustic scenery.
Fruits Of The Sea
Gower is famous for its shell fish, with oysters, marsh grass and cockles very common in dishes in the area. Fairy Hill in Gower is one of Wales’s most well known restaurants and it utilises the best of local ingredients to create wonderful dishes. The area also offers some great pub food and ales and The Greyhound Inn in Gower is a fine place for some simple, hearty Welsh food or a couple of drinks after a long day of walking the peninsula.
Oxwich Bay
with its sandy beaches, great windsurfing and nature reserve is a must see when in Gower. A mammoth’s skull was found in the caves beside the beaches, as were the bones of a human male, who died 29,000 years ago! The area was also a popular smuggling spot and there are many manmade caves where contraband was hidden.
Rhossili Bay also offers a beautiful beach that is over 3 miles long and the area feels the full force of the Atlantic and coastal weather. Its perfect for walking, surfing and hang gliding, offering sublime views of the area.
Gower is acknowledged as one of Wales’s most beautiful area, which is quite a big statement as there is tough competition considering other areas in the country, such as Snowdonia National Park.
