Relax in Majorca’s Late Summer Sun

When you think of Majorca, a group of teenagers may come to mind! But Majorca has plenty of fabulous places to visit and here are just a few ideas to get Majorca on your holiday list!

Day One

On your first day in Majorca, head to the south of Muro. Here you will be able to look around the gorgeous Sant Joan Baptista church. You won’t be able to miss it – it sits in Muro’s main square. You’ll notice a small arch connected to the church. It takes you through to the old watchtower so go inside the church and you’ll see fantastic stained glass windows. There is a large altarpiece at the top of the church for you to look around. You may also be able to climb to the top of the watchtower, but ask someone on the site for permission!

Day Two

If you don’t know too much about the history of Majorca then go to the Ethological Museum. The museum shows what life used to be like for Spaniards years before and its housed in an old mansion. There is a re-created kitchen and pharmacy, old carriages and various workshops. The attraction is open Wednesday to Saturday between 10am and 3pm – Thursday to Sunday from 10am to 2pm. Closed throughout August.

Day Three

If tradition is your thing, then head over to the Gordiola Glassworks in Algaida. You’ll be able to see professional glass-blowers at work. You can also have a look around the museum upstairs. It has a lot of different forms of glassware on show such as different bottle and vases etc. They also have a fine collection of glass work from around the world. There is also a shop available, if you want to buy any souvenirs to take home with you.

Day Four

If you want to simply enjoy your surroundings and explore the local town, then head to Petra. Here you can walk around the quaint streets and try some local cuisine. This is ideal if you want to stay away from the main tourist restaurants. For some great scenery, visit the windmills in Montuiri.  If you like to go on walks in picturesque areas then Llucmajor is the place for you. The grounds of Finca Son Sama have lovely gardens and walkways.

Day Five

One of the landmarks in Majorca is the Gran Hotel. It’s in the Placa Weyler and was first built in 1903. It is a big venue with various exhibitions. If you love classic art, see the work of Anglada Camarasa. The artist has their paintings displayed in the hotel all year round.

Day Six

If you enjoyed the area, head back to the Placa Weyler and find the Teatre Principal. You’ll notice that there will be steps leading up to the Placa Major. When you get to the top of the steps you’ll see an arcaded square. This is the perfect place to take in some local entertainment. A number of street performers and artists go to the square on a daily basis. There are several good cafe’s too so you can write your cards, and enjoy a coffee or two.

Day Seven

Why not spend your last day at the beach? There are a number of popular beaches such as Palma Nova or Magaluf and the benefit of a visit later in the year, means its much quieter and more relaxed – everyone has plenty of space!

alcudia beach

Alcudia, Majorca

Set on the north west coast of Majorca, Alcudia is about 55 kilometres from the island’s capital Palma.  Alcudia has two main areas, Puerto Alcudia on the coast, and the historic old town which lies just inland.  Most holiday makers stay in Puerto Alcudia and the area has miles of wonderful golden sands that stretch all the way down to Playa de Muro futher along the coast.

Alcudia Bay

Alcudia bay is the best known of all the beaches locally, and has shallow warm waters and a large open sandy beach that make it ideal for families.  There are many hotels, pubs and cafes around the beach which are child friendly as well, making it a great place to spend the whole day.

The El Laberinto Maze fun park is a great place aimed at kids and families both local and visitors.  It has mazes that are made from moveable panels, so that they can regularly change the layout, and there are many games to be played within the maze as well as pirates and monsters to meet.

The Hidropark is a water park.  It has six different pools including an infant pool for the really young, a wave pool and a beach pool, as well as lots of slides and chutes designed for all different age groups.  There are mini motor boats you can have a go on, and next door is a 54 hole super golf course with bar, restaurant, and picnic area.

The Bellevue hotel complex has a karting site called Racing Passion, it’s open from early in the morning, through till late at night offering carting for the whole family during the day, and then floodlight carting at night as well.

Alcudia old town

Alcudia old town is full of historical interest, and every Wednesday afternoon, a guided tour takes place.  It is a walking tour organised by the local tourist office, and takes about two hours, taking you around the town to see the many interesting buildings, while giving you information about the areas history.

Horse riding is popular locally, and there are a number of places that will take you on a horse riding trip around the area, from leisurely rides along the coast to treks into the mountains for the more experienced rider, it’s a great way to see far more than you could either on foot or by car, and there are riding trails that lead through olive groves, and lush woodland giving you a chance to experience a different side of Alcudia.
